Italy to approve austerity measures Wednesday: PM

09-14-2011 08:34 BJT

BRUSSELS, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Italian parliament would pass the government's austerity measure Wednesday, confirmed Prime Minister Berlusconi here Tuesday.

Berlusconi made the statement in a joint press conference with the European Council President Herman Van Rompuy.

The two leaders discussed the uncertain economic situation looming in eurozone, Italy's austerity plan, and the European economic governance reform, said Van Rompuy.

"We will reach a balanced budget by 2013," said Berlusconi, "and we will amend our Constitution requiring the government to balance its budget as well."

"The opposition is criticizing the austerity measures just to get in the way of the government and ruin the image of the President of the Council of Ministers, but in fact, they are ruining the image of Italy," he added.

The Italian Senate last Wednesday approved the government's austerity plan in a move to sooth nervous investors.

"The austerity plan will raise about 54 billion euros (74 billion U.S. dollars)," continued Berlusconi, "and we are determined to pursue measures to boost growth."

The Italian Prime Minister kept optimistic about the nation's finances despite the interest rate of the latest issue of five-year government bond rose to record high of 5.6 percent Tuesday, up from 4.93 percent last time.
