Rwanda's soccer boss resigns

09-14-2011 09:30 BJT

KIGALI, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- The President of the Rwandan Soccer Federation (FERWAFA), Brig Gen.Jean Bosco Kazura on Tuesday resigned from his post following the poor performance of the team.

The Central African national team has been disqualified from the 2012 African Cup of Nations which will be co-hosted by Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

A former player with the Burundian club of Vital'O FC (D1) before joining the resistance movement of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (FPR, current ruling party), Brig.Gen. Kazura has occupied different positions in the military hierarchy in Rwanda, including his current position as commander of Rwanda's military academy.

He has shocked all football fans in the Central African nation by resigning as soccer federation boss only one week before the start of the season.

According to a letter posted by the federation, Brig.Gen Kazura has decided to resign for "personal reasons".

However, it is said that one of his main rivals was expected to be another senior military officer, since the Central African nation's football body has always been ruled by soldiers.

At several occasions, Rwanda's ministry of youth, sports and culture has given warnings to the national football body, while electing new leadership after the dueling factions were failing to agree on a candidate between senior military officers and civilians who were vying for one of the highest paying jobs in Rwanda.
