U.S. condemns assassination of Afghan former president

WASHINGTON, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Tuesday condemned the assassination of Afghan former President Burhanuddin Rabbani, who is also the chief of Afghan peace council.

In a statement issued by the State Department, Clinton condemned "in the strongest terms" the assassination of Rabbani who headed the 70-member Afghan High Peace Council charged with brokering peace with the Taliban insurgents.

The U.S. will support the Afghan government's efforts to pursue the attackers of this "cowardly attack" and bring them to justice, said Clinton, vowing to continue to increase pressure on al-Qaida and the Taliban.

The Secretary of State acknowledged that there are people who are determined to undermine the peace process and more violence are expected in the future.

"But the Afghan people will not be deterred from pursuing a more peaceful, democratic future for their country and we will continue to stand with them and support their efforts," she said.

A suicide explosion went off in Rabbani's house on Tuesday evening when he was with a small group of Taliban who came to Kabul to meet peace council officials, a close source from the Rabbani office told Xinhua.
