Japan department store sales fall for 2nd straight month in August

09-21-2011 11:21 BJT

TOKYO, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Japan's department store sales fell 1.7 percent in August from a year earlier on a same-store basis, marking the second consecutive month of decline, the Japan Department Stores Association said on Tuesday.

According to the association, the retraction was partly due to there being one less Sunday in the recording period as compared to the same time a year earlier and the industry body also cited unseasonably cold weather in the latter half of the month also as an impact on sales in August.

The unadjusted figures showed a two percent decline in sales to 425.90 billion yen (5.56 billion U.S. dollars), followed by a 0.1 percent retreat in July, a 0.3 percent gain in June and a 2.4 percent decline in May, the association's data showed.

Clothing sales were down 3.4 percent on year in August, marking a sixth straight month of retraction, but sales of consumer electronics jumped 13.5 percent, partly due to Japan's switch from analogue to digital TV broadcasts and consumers purchasing new digital TV sets.

In the Tokyo metropolitan region alone the combined sales at 25 department stores sampled dropped 2.9 percent year-on-year in August, again marking a decline for a second straight month.

The association collected data from 86 firms operating 253 department stores that have been open to the public for a year or more. The data is adjusted to facilitate comparisons on a same- store basis and is widely regarded as a barometer of consumer sentiment nationwide.
