KABUL, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Afghan police, backed by army and NATO-led forces, have killed 20 insurgents and detained 22 in different parts of the country over the past 24 hours, Afghan Interior Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

"Afghan National Police (ANP) in collaboration with army and Coalition Forces launched 14 joint operations in Kabul, Nangarhar, Kunduz, Balkh, Kandahar, Helmand, Wardak, Logar, Khost and Paktia provinces over the past 24 hours," providing daily operational updates the statement said.

As a result of these operations, 20 armed insurgents were killed and 22 others were arrested by ANP, it said.

During these operations ANP also discovered and seized two rocket launchers with 14 rounds of rockets, two machine guns, 14 pieces of AK-47 assault rifles with 56 AK-47 magazines, 17 hand grenades and 400 machine gun bullets, it added.

Afghan officials often use the word "insurgents" for referring to Taliban militants.

However, the militants group, who stepped up their attacks on Afghan and NATO-led troops since a spring rebel offensive was launched in May this year in the country, has yet to make comments.

The Taliban outfit has also warned the civilians to stay away from official gatherings, military convoys and centers regarded as the legitimate targets by militants.

The latest casualties on Taliban announced one day after a Taliban suicide bomber targeted and killed former President of Afghanistan and Chairman of Afghan High Peace Council Burhanuddin Rabbani in his residence in capital city of Kabul on Tuesday evening.
