KABUL - A NATO airstrike killed a key Taliban leader Monday in Sayyidabad district of Afghanistan's Wardak province, with Maidan Shar as its capital, 35 km west of Kabul, NATO said on Tuesday.

"A combined Afghan and coalition security force conducted a precision airstrike in Sayyidabad district, Wardak province, resulting in the death of a key Taliban leader yesterday," said the statement issued by NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

The target of the operation was responsible for planning attacks against Afghan forces. He provided weapons and logistical support to insurgents throughout the district for use in ambush and roadside bomb attacks along Highway 1 or Kabul-Kandahar highway, according to statement.

"Following the strike, the security force conducted a follow-on assessment of the area and determined no civilians were harmed during the operation," the statement said.

Taliban has yet to make comments.

In another development, 11 Afghan civilians were injured Monday night when an unknown man hurled a hand grenade on a building where a wedding party was underway in Khost city, the provincial capital of eastern Khost province, police spokesman in the province Ziarat Gul told Xinhua.

The motive of the attack have not been cleared, however, Taliban militants, who banned music and other kind of entertainment during their regime ousted in late 2001, have been blamed in the past for attacking wedding ceremonies and music shops in the insurgency-hit country.
