ISTANBUL, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Teams from the counter terrorism unit of the Istanbul police department detained 15 suspects Tuesday during raids in Turkey's largest city Istanbul.

The detained suspects were taken for questioning following the raids in the Istanbul suburb of Esenler, the Turkish Dogan news agency reported.

The suspects are being accused of organizing illegal protests, carrying out attacks on homes and work places with Molotov cocktails and setting alight automobiles.

The suspects are being linked with membership in the outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK), which is Listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union. The PKK took up arms in 1984 to create an ethnic homeland in southeastern Turkey.

More than 40,000 people have been killed in conflicts involving the PKK over the past two decades.
