NZ win grape challenge

09-28-2011 13:27 BJT

While New Zealand's rugby team was hitting top form on the pitch against France over the weekend, the nation's wine makers were seeing off a chal-lenge from their American and Italian rivals.

The South Island town of Nelson hosts the US and Italy during the Rugby World Cup and local wine makers took the opportunity to compare their tipple with that of the visiting teams.

Four international wine judges sampled 15 wines from each of the countries at a blind tasting and selected the best five in each of three categories Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and Riesling.

The top spots in each category were evenly split, with New Zealand awarded best Riesling, Italy best Gewurztraminer and the US best Pinot Gris.

But New Zealand won the overall title after local wines accounted for seven of the judges' top 15 picks, just ahead of Italy on six.
