Nazi parade by Thai students triggers controversy

09-28-2011 13:51 BJT

BANGKOK, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- A Thai school has apologized to a Jewish human rights group after its students staged a Nazi-themed parade featuring Adorf Hitler and his SS guards, local media reported Tuesday.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center, a Jewish human rights group based in Los Angeles issued on Monday a statement protesting the " disgraceful display," accusing the school administration of " glorifying Nazis."

The outrage came after some photographs taken on a sports day in the Sacred Heart Preparatory School in northern Thailand's Chiang Mai province were posted online. One picture on the Bangkok Post website showed a group of girls dressing in Nazi SS guards outfit and wearing Nazi's symbolic swastika armbands marched through the school ground.

"It is difficult to calculate the hurt such a display inflicted on survivors of the Nazi Holocaust and the families of all victims of Nazism. There can be no justification for such an outrage to emanate from a place of learning," said Rabbi Abranham Cooper, associate dean of the organization.

The high school made an apology soon after receiving the protest. Chanwit Tubsuphan, a local education official explained that according to the school tradition, students are free to choose themes for the sport events without informing the teachers beforehand.

He said that the students did not realize that the Nazi theme had any sensitive or negative implication but insisted schools are required by the Education Ministry to provide students with lessons on the history of World War II.
