Australia commissions review on relationship with Asia

09-28-2011 14:31 BJT

MELBOURNE, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard on Wednesday announced it would commission a review in Australia's relationship with Asia.

Australia in the Asian Century white paper will review economic and strategic change in Asia including China, Japan and India, and the opportunities and implications it will have on Australia.

Gillard announced the white paper in Melbourne on Wednesday while addressing the University of Melbourne's AsiaLink conference.

She said the paper would provide a national blueprint for Australia at a time of economic growth and change in the region, and it will consider opportunities for deeper engagement between Australia and Asia in the areas of economy, science and technology, business and clean energy.

"The shift of economic and strategic weight to Asia has never been more rapid or more profound for Australia's interests than it is now," Gillard told reporters in Melbourne on Wednesday. "(The paper) will help Australia navigate the Asian Century to seize the opportunities it offers and to meet the challenges it poses."

The paper will also give recommendations on domestic policy settings and consider short-term initiatives, to be put in place over the next five years; and longer-term plans that could be developed in the years to 2025.

The white paper, to be led by former Treasury secretary Dr Ken Henry, will be released in mid-2012.
