KUALA LUMPUR, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba is scheduled to visit Malaysia on Oct. 12-13, his first visit since his appointment in September, the Malaysian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Monday.

Gemba is expected to discuss "bilateral, regional and international issues and cooperation of mutual interests" with his Malaysian counterpart, Anifah Aman.

"Both countries have established extensive links in the areas of trade, investment, education and capacity building through the Look East Policy, technology exchanges, cultural exchanges and tourism," Malaysia's Foreign Ministry said.

"The visit (by Koichiro Gemba) will further cement the existing solid ties of friendship and cooperation between Malaysia and Japan," the statement reads.

Taro Aso was the last Japanese foreign minister to have visited Malaysia.

He was in Kuala Lumpur in 2006 to attend the ASEAN+3 ministerial meeting.
