Security forces raid al-Qaida cell in Yemen's Aden

10-11-2011 12:16 BJT

ADEN, Yemen, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Yemen's interior ministry said Monday that security forces managed to storm an al-Qaida base for manufacturing explosives-packed vehicles in the southern port city of Aden.

The ministry said in a brief statement posted on its website that Aden's security forces raided an integrated laboratory which is used to make various explosive materials and rocket-propelled grenades used in attacking military officials and bombing police stations in the al-Tawahi district.

The operation came after intensive investigations into the activities of al-Qaida militants, who committed criminal acts against the army forces in Aden city, the ministry said.

A number of Aden's military intelligence offices and government buildings experienced during the past three months a series of bomb blasts and suicide attacks, killing and injuring dozens of military members, as the country's authorities accused militants of the al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) of masterminding the attacks.

Observers fear that, with continuous domestic conflict and bloodshed, the country may slide into civil war which would benefit al-Qaida.
