Lee Kuan Yew to receive Lincoln Medal

SINGAPORE, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- Singapore's former minister mentor Lee Kuan Yew will receive the Lincoln Medal next week during a visit to the United States, his office said on Tuesday.

He will be the first Asian to receive the award.

Lee will be visiting Turkey from Tuesday till Friday where he will attend the JPMorgan Chase International Council Meeting.

He will then visit the United States till Oct. 24.

He will receive the Lincoln Medal at the historic Ford's Theater in Washington on Oct. 18. The Lincoln Medal is awarded to individuals who illuminate or reflect former U.S. president Abraham Lincoln's legacy of leadership and service in their body of work, accomplishments or personal attributes.

Previous recipients include Desmond Tutu, and current U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

While in Washington, Lee will meet the White House Chief of Staff William Daley, the National Security Advisor Tom Donilon, and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Martin Dempsey.

He will then go to New York and speak at a Capital Group dinner on Oct. 20.

Lee, 88, has stepped down as minister mentor from Singapore's cabinet following the general election earlier this year and recently left the central executive committee of the ruling People 's Action Party. He remains a senior advisor to Government of Singapore Investment Corporation (GIC).
