Chinese president, Belgian king exchange messages to mark 40 years of diplomatic ties

BEIJING, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and Belgian King Albert II exchanged congratulatory messages Tuesday to celebrate the 40th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations.

Hu said in his message that bilateral ties have made significant progress over the past 40 years.

He said that especially in recent years, high-level contacts between the two countries have grown increasingly active, economic and trade cooperation has continued to deepen, while cooperation in the fields of science and technology, culture and education has yielded abundant fruit. The two countries have also kept good communication and coordination on international issues and China-Europe issues, he said.

He also said maintaining long-term and stable development of China-Belgium ties accord with the fundamental interests of the two peoples.

In celebrating the 40th anniversary, China, which always attaches great importance to Sino-Belgian relations, is willing to strengthen all-level exchanges between the two peoples and deepen pragmatic cooperation in all fields in order to lift the ties to a new level.

King Albert II said in his message that Sino-Belgian relations have seen uninterrupted growth since the establishment of diplomatic ties 40 years ago.

The bilateral cooperation in fields of politics, economy, science and technology and culture has grown increasingly active, he said.

He also said Belgium is willing to make joint efforts with China to deepen a relationship of mutual trust and benefit, and hopes bilateral cooperation will be even more fruitful.
