Fuel depot blast in Libya's Sirte kills 100

10-26-2011 08:32 BJT Special Report:Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi dies |

TRIPOLI, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- At least 100 people were killed from a fuel tank explosion in the northern Libyan coastal city of Sirte, less than a week after Muammar Gaddafi was captured and killed there, Al-Arabiya TV reported Tuesday.

National Transitional Council (NTC) commander Leith Mohammed was quoted as saying that the blast occurred late on Monday as a crowd waited nearby to fill their cars.

He further said that as many as 50 people were injured in the blast.

Sirte, the devastated hometown of Gaddafi, who ruled Libya with an iron grip, was the last bastion of resistance to NTC forces and the site of his capture.

Fierce fighting over the last few weeks had forced the majority of residents to flee the city.
