U.S. welcomes Yemeni president's commitment to power transfer

10-26-2011 08:50 BJT

WASHINGTON, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- The United States regards it "a positive step" for Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh to reaffirm his commitment to a Gulf-brokered deal demanding power transfer in his country, the State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said on Tuesday.

"The president had two main messages," Nuland told reporters at a regular news briefing. "The first was to advise Ambassador Feierstein that he intends to sign the GCC agreement. The second was to inform Ambassador Feierstein of the cease-fire that he has called between the Yemeni government forces and the opposition."

"The proof will be in the pudding, but it is a positive step that he called the ambassador in and recommitted to him, to us, to the international community that he intends to sign it, so now we look for him to make good on that commitment," she added.

On Tuesday, Saleh asked to see U.S. Ambassador to Yemen Gerald Feierstein, their first since the president returned home last month from Saudi Arabia after recuperating from wounds sustained during an attack on his presidential palace in early June.

Despite protests since late January calling for an immediate end to his 33-year rule, Saleh has reneged three times on his promise to sign a deal brokered by the Gulf Cooperation Council ( GCC), under which he should step down in return for immunity from prosecution.
