LONDON, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- Liverpool skipper Steve Gerrard will miss England's upcoming friendlies against Spain and Sweden as he is still recovering from a right ankle infection, said the Premier League club on Tuesday.

Gerrard, 31, was not in Liverpool's squad which defeated West Brom 2-0 away in the Premier League fixture last Saturday after suffering an infection to an ankle injury he picked up in training.

A club statement released on Tuesday read: "Steven Gerrard has now undergone treatment to clear out all infection from his right ankle, which has been placed in a protective plaster cast.

"The player will not be available for this weekend's game against Swansea City or for the upcoming England friendlies against Spain and Sweden."

England play Spain at Wembley on 12 November and Sweden on 15 November.

Gerrard has rested for six months for a groin injury before resuming action in late September.
