Russian rider Shpilevskiy wins Tour of Taihu Lake opening stage

WUXI, East China, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- Boris Shpilevskiy of Iran's Tabriz Petrochemical Team, who impressed at the just closed Tour of Hainan in South China, won the city criterium that opened the five-day Tour of Taihu Lake here on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old Russian finished the 130.3km course in two hours 41 minutes and 47 seconds, narrowly beating V Australia's Aaron Kemps to the second place, while German Sebastian Korber of Nutrixxion Sparkasse was the third, both in same time.

Shpilevskiy, who also earned 14 points in sprint, will wear the general individual leader's yellow jersey for Wednesday's 104.5km stage between Wuzhong to Gaoxin, Suzhou, in which sprinter Korber in the general points classifications' green jersey will look to take a victory.

The red jersey of the best Greater China individual went to Hengxiang Cycling Team's Wang Meiyin, who finished in the leading group, while the 361 Cycling team's Xue Cheng was the blue jersey winner with the best result among young riders.

Wong Kam Po, the most famous local rider who has registered for the 200,000 U.S. dollars tournament to represent the Chinese Hong Kong team, came out the big loser of the day by failing to rank front at any classifications.
