PHNOM PENH, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Sen said Wednesday that the country has given out flood relief aid to approximately 250,000 affected families with an estimated 1 million people so far.

The distribution is still underway to reach out to all the flood-affected families of about 1.5 million people, he said during the ground breaking ceremony for the construction of the 5th Cambodia-China Friendship Bridge, or 2nd Chroy Changvar Bridge, across Tonle Sap River in Phnom Penh.

Cambodia has suffered the worst flooding in the last decade since August and 18 cities and provinces have been submerged.

Hun Sen said at least 250 people were killed by the floods.

A number of foreign countries and charitable organizations have provided relief assistance to Cambodia to help the victims.

"As, now, the floods have subsided, even slowing, I'd like to express sincere thanks to both local and foreign friends for relief assistance," said the premier.

Those are Japan, China, South Korea, Thailand, Laos, Singapore, the United States, France, and Australia as well as the United Nations agencies.

According to the reports of the National Committee for Disaster Management, the floods had destroyed 230,000 of rice paddies, or 9 percent of the total rice paddy production this year.

Moreover, nearly 3,000 kilometers of gravel roads and some 180 kilometers of national roads have been damaged.

It is estimated that the floods cost the country 521 million U. S. dollars, mainly the damage of rice paddies and roads.
