Rain, snow forecast for central, east China

11-02-2011 14:12 BJT

BEIJING, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Dense fog will accompany rain and snow forecast for central and eastern China over the next few days, said the National Meteorological Center on Wednesday.

The center said some areas could receive up to 60 mm of precipitation and northeastern regions should brace for heavy snow.

Thick fog will continue to blanket southern regions, the center said, warning of increased risks on roads as well as at seaports and airports.

The country's top meteorological authority issued a blue alert Wednesday morning, the lowest in a four-scale alert system, urging people in fog-affected areas to be aware of the air quality which will be worsened by the fog and to reduce driving speeds to ensure safety.

Fog and haze will decrease visibility to within 1,000 meters in some parts of Hunan and Guangdong provinces, the center said.

Beijing Municipal Meteorological observatory ended the yellow alert, the second in a four-scale alert system, at 17 p.m. on Tuesday, according to the center.
