Classes for 6,000 students suspended after massive blast damages schools in SW China

11-02-2011 14:15 BJT

GUIYANG, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- More than 6,000 students from six schools have had their classes suspended since the schools were damaged by a nearby explosion in southwest China's Guizhou Province Tuesday, local authorities said Wednesday.

Four primary schools and two middle schools were closed as the buildings may have been compromised in the explosion that occurred at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in the city of Fuquan, said officials with the municipal education bureau.

The education bureau will send technicians to check the safety of the school buildings whose windows were shattered in the blast, they said.

More than 50 students and seven teachers were among the over 200 people injured. The death toll climbed from seven to eight on Wednesday as one seriously injured person died after treatments failed, the city's publicity officials said.

The city government has earmarked 5 million yuan (787,065 U.S. dollars) for the relocation of those whose houses were damaged, medical treatment and other blast-related expenses.

The accident happened when two cargo trucks loaded with about 70 metric tons of explosives blew up in front of a motor vehicle testing station about 100 km from Guizhou's capital of Guiyang, according to the local rescue headquarters.

Windows were shattered in nearby houses, and cars parked near the site were severely damaged. A nearby grain warehouse was also seriously damaged.
