BEIJING, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and his Peruvian counterpart Ollanta Humala on Wednesday exchanged congratulatory messages on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between their two countries.

Peru was among the first Latin American countries to establish diplomatic ties with the People's Republic of China, Hu said in his message.

Thanks to the efforts of both sides, political mutual trust has been growing steadily over the past 40 years, practical cooperation fruitful and people-to-people and cultural exchanges expanding fast, Hu said, adding that the two countries have also conducted close coordination and cooperation in international and regional affairs.

China attaches great importance to the development of ties with Peru and is ready to work with the Peruvian side to deepen their traditional friendship, expand mutually beneficial coorperation and advance the bilateral strategic partnership, the Chinese president said.

Humala said in his message that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Peru and China on November 2, 1971, bilateral relations have been growing continuously along the path of cooperation and mutual respect, with fruitful cooperation in bilateral and multilateral areas.

Bilateral relations were upgraded to the level of a strategic partnership in 2008, and the free trade agreement between the two countries marks a milestone in bilateral ties, giving a strong impetus to economic and trade links.

Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi also exchanged congratulatory message with his Peruvian counterpart Rafael Roncagliolo on the same day.
