Australia coach expects more from Kewell and Emerton

CANBERRA, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Australia national soccer team coach Holger Osieck on Wednesday welcomed the returning of stars Harry Kewell and Brett Emerton, but warned they will need to improve their performances to win a starting spot for Australia's next two Asian World Cup qualifiers.

Osieck on Wednesday included Kewell and Emerton and Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer in his 23-man squad for the upcoming qualifiers against Oman on November 11 and Thailand on November 15.

Kewell and Emerton FC stars were omitted from last month's matches against Malaysia and Oman, as Osieck said he preferred to let them gain needed match fitness with their new A-League clubs.

Now they are back in the national squad, but the coach said they are no guarantees they will feature, with both players some way off their best form.

Osieck rejected the suggestion he was disappointed in Kewell and Emerton's form, but said he made it clear to Kewell recently that "performance is what matters and everybody needs to acknowledge that."

"Knowing the value they can bring to the team I invited them to be part of our traveling group," he told Australia Associated Press on Wednesday.

"But there is no guarantee at all that they will be in the team. As you know I am pretty much performance related.

"I'm not saying I'm disappointed in their form but I expect a lot more, which is a slight difference.

"I put this squad together because I have the quality and a double back-up for every position and that is my approach.

"And whoever shows the right performance in training will have an excellent chance of starting."

Tim Cahill was omitted from the squad, as he recovers from a groin injury.
