MADRID, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Angel de Maria was the star of the game as Real Madrid defeated Osasuna 7-1 in the Santiago Bernabeu stadium on Sunday.

Before picking up what could be a serious injury, the Real Madrid winger was at his best in the game, setting up three goals in the first 45 minutes on a historic day for Jose Mourinho's side.

It was the first time Real Madrid had played a league game in their home stadium at midday and except for the injured duo of Marcelo and Kaka, coach Jose Mourinho was able to field his strongest side with Fabio Coentrao in at left back and Higuain leading the attack.

Osasuna meanwhile had travelled to Madrid with seven first team players out through injury and suspension and youngster Eneko Satrustegui covering on the left of their defense.

The fans in Madrid responded well to the early kick off, which was sold out and there was a festive atmosphere in the stands on a bright day in the capital.

After a slow start in which Madrid struggled to break down a packed Osasuna defense, Cristiano Ronaldo, who had earlier shown the "Golden boot" award he received on Friday to the fans, opened the scoring.

The striker headed home a De Maria cross from inside the six yard box after losing his markers after 24 minutes.

Osasuna levelled with their only shot on target as Ibrahima Balde took advantage of a quickly taken free kick to beat Iker Casillas with a low shot.

The 1-1 lasted four minutes before Real Madrid retook the lead. Central defender Pepe headed home another De Maria cross on 34 minutes.

Before the break Gonzalo Higuain netted Madrid's third, turning in the Osasuna area and curling the ball past the helpless Andres Fernandez after a defense splitting pass from De Maria, who was virtually unstoppable.

De Maria's contribution ended three minutes in the second half as he left the pitch with a hamstring injury, but his work had opened up the floodgates.

Ronaldo made it 4-1 from the penalty spot following a foul from Eneko, who earned his second yellow card and against 10 men, Real Madrid began to enjoy themselves.

Ronaldo made it 5-1 with a close range header before the hour and then Karim Benzema, who had replaced De Maria scored twice to leave Osasuna reeling and Real Madrid wondering if they will be able to play all of their games at midday.
