Weekends see fierce battles in Spanish basketball

MADRID, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- The sixth round of games in the Spanish Endesa ACB basketball league continues this weekend with a series of interesting matches.

The weekend tips off on Saturday with a game between Assignia Manresa and Bizkaya Bilbao Basket. The sides currently eighth and ninth in the league table are both looking to tighten their grip on a place in the end of season play-offs and the Copa del Rey.

The remaining games are all held on Sunday and Asefa Estudiantes and CAI Zaragoza both need wins to climb away from the danger zone near the bottom of the table and calm nerves following unconvincing starts to the season. Zaragoza need to bounce back after losing to Lagun Aro last weekend.

Co-leaders Unicaja Malaga are favorites to beat Blancos Rueda Valladolid, who are struggling at the start of the season, while Lucentium Alicante, who have also won four of their first five matches, will expect to win at home to second from bottom Gran Canaria. The visitors are well below their best form and currently occupy one of the relegation zones.

The only side below Gran Canaria is UCAM Murcia, who look for their second win of the campaign when they entertain Basketball Fuenlabrada, who are aiming for their third success of the season.

There is a derby between Regal Barcelona and FIATC Joventut in which the visitors aim to test the current league leaders, while Real Madrid, the fourth side with four wins from five matches, visit Cajasol, who have already managed to beat Barcelona this season.

Finally Lagun Aro have the difficult task of taking their second win from six games when they play at home to Valencia and Caja Laboral aim to tighten their grip on the top eight at home to Blusens Monbus.
