Apple working with Sharp on iTV: report

11-24-2011 09:06 BJT

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- Apple is working with Japanese display manufacturer Sharp on the next-generation displays for upcoming devices such as iPad 3, iPhone 5 and the much-anticipated iTV, U.S. media reported on Wednesday.

In a note to investors by Peter Misek, an analyst from securities and investment banking group Jeffries, Sharp is retooling a production line at its factory in Sakai to manufacture modified IGZO TFT LCD panels for devices like iTV, according to technology news website All Things Digital.

The iTV is a rumored future smart TV from Apple that has been fascinating the industry and media especially after Apple co- founder Steve Jobs passed away in October.

TFT LCD is a variant of liquid crystal display which uses thin- film transistor technology to improve image quality. To meet the demand for high-resolution panels for smartphones and tablets, Sharp introduced IGZO technology this April, a new oxide material consisting of indium, gallium and zinc for thin-film transistors to drive liquid crystals in a panel.

Misek suggested that the line might be ready for commercial production by next February, which means a possible release date for iTV in mid-2012.

"Based on our discussions, interestingly other TV manufacturers have begun a scrambling search to identify what iTV will be and do, " Misek said. "They hope to avoid the fate of other industries and manufacturers who were caught flat-footed by Apple."

"Mainstream TV manufacturers are likely to be at least 6 to 12 months behind in a best-case scenario," he added.

The analyst also expected the new panel to initially appear in Apple's third-generation iPad and to be featured in a six- generation iPhone in 2012.
