Leverkusen signs youngster defender Philipp Wollscheid

BERLIN, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- Bundesliga team Leverkusen signed Nuremberg youngster defender Philipp Wollscheid for five years, the club said on their official homepage on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old and 1,94m defender will join Leverkusen in July 2012.

"We are convinced that Bayer Leverkusen signed with Philipp Wollscheide one of the most talented and best central defenders in Germany. He has great potential and will strengthen our defensive play," manager Wolfgang Holzhaeuser said in a statement.

Both sides have to maintain silence about other conditions of transfers.

"We are delighted to have secured a jewel with Philipp. I'm firmly convinced that he will go through a positive development," sports director Rudi Voeller said.

Leverkusen sits on 7th position of the Bundesliga standing and will encounter Berlin on Saturday.
