Australian House Speaker resigns

11-24-2011 10:16 BJT

CANBERRA, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Speaker of House of Representatives Harry Jenkins on Thursday morning surprisingly resigned. There is speculation that Deputy Speaker and Queensland Liberal MP Peter Slipper could succeed Jenkins.

Jenkins told parliament Thursday he had become progressively frustrated at the stricture of minority government. Jenkins said he had always tried to uphold the fine traditions of Speaker and carry out his duties in the most independent and non-partisan manner possible.

"My desire is to be able to participate in policy and parliamentary debate, and this would be incompatible with continuing in the role of Speaker," Jenkins said.

After making his statement, Jenkins left the chamber to rousing applause, and went to Government House where he formally tendered his resignation to Governor-General Quentin Bryce.

Jenkins was re-elected as Speaker following the 2010 general election.
