DPRK slams South Korea's Yeonpyeong military drill as new provocation

11-24-2011 15:09 BJT

PYONGYANG, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea's (DPRK) military condemned Thursday a South Korean anti-DPRK war rehearsal as a new provocation to Pyongyang, the official KCNA news agency reported.

South Korea's military conducted a large-scale war rehearsal on five islands and the surrounding waters in the West Sea on Wednesday, the first anniversary of an artillery bombardment of Yeonpyeong Island by the North.

According to a report issued by the DPRK's Supreme Command of the People's Army, Seoul's rehearsal showed it had not learned "due lesson on the first anniversary of the shelling."

The drill was "a new political and military provocation to the army and people of the DPRK," it said.

Moreover, the report claimed last year's shelling of Yeonpyeong Island was "a legitimate self-defensive step against the provocateurs," and the DPRK revolutionary armed forces were "in full readiness to go into a decisive battle to counter any military provocation."

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said earlier the drill was meant to "demonstrate our resolve to strike back at auxiliary forces as well as the source of provocation if North Korea (DPRK) conducts another reckless provocation."

According to the JCS, K-9 self-propelled guns, a 4,500-ton destroyer, an artillery hunting radar and KF-16 fighter jets were mobilized for the one-day drill.
