New-borns in S. Korea fall first time in 19 months in Sept.: report

11-24-2011 16:22 BJT

SEOUL, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- The number of births in South Korea dropped for the first time in 19 months in September amid the government's constant efforts to enhance the country's low birthrate, a report showed Thursday.

According to a report by Statistics Korea, 39,300 babies were born in September, down 7.1 percent, or 3,000, from a year ago. The rate of fall marked the largest decrease since February 2009.

"The decline is attributed to relatively high baby births tallied in September last year," an agency official was quoted as saying by Yonhap news agency. "We cannot say that the drop will become a trend based on just one month's figures."

The declining birthrate and aging population has long been a chronic problem in South Korea. The country has one of the world's lowest fertility of 1.2 children per mother, according to a report by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
