China good example in hi-tech law enforcement: Mexican official

11-30-2011 10:18 BJT

MEXICO CITY, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- China is "a model to follow" for Mexico in developing its law enforcement technology, the capital city's chief prosecutor said Tuesday.

It is "very important" to compare notes with China on traffic control, Attorney General Miguel Angel Mancera said in an interview with Xinhua.

"We know some of the road systems in China are equipped with automatic monitoring systems to supervise vehicles. Cameras are taking pictures and detecting irregularities, and all these high technology systems are critical to a city where you want to have order," Mancera said.

"If you have good traffic order, it will make the citizens' life in the city easier," he added.

The chief prosecutor said city officials are interested in exchanging views with China not only in traffic law enforcement, but also in other areas.

"Personally, we have talked with many government officials in China to learn from its subway systems, transportation systems, as well as the implementation of technology for the police," he said, adding that China has obviously come a long way in its development.

"Technology is something important, we learned in China. This combination of law enforcement and the use of technology has been something we've been prioritizing," the attorney general said.

On Mexico City's achievements in combating crime, he said the police have made "substantial improvements in dealing with car theft, kidnappings, as well as homicide cases."

"We have a monitoring system with more than 13,000 cameras throughout the city like China. With this, we don't only rely on police forces, but also on the machines and advanced technology," Mancera said.
