11-30-2011 11:15 BJT

LA PAZ, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- At least 10 university students and 20 police officers were wounded Tuesday in a clash between student protesters and police in a town near the Bolivian capital of La Paz, police said.

The clash occurred in El Alto, 10 km away from La Paz, when police used tear gas to disperse the protestors, who fought back with stones.

The protestors, hundreds in number, had cut off a highway linking the town to the airport. On their way, they attacked booths, a police station and public buses with stones and dynamite devices.

The clashed lasted more than three hours after 30 demonstrators were arrested, police said.

The students were protesting against the government's decision to cut funding for San Andres State University in La Paz.

They had held demonstrations since last week, cutting off the main route between El Alto and La Paz, to demand more educational resources.
