Dignity of diplomatic personnel, organizations should be ensured: Chinese spokesman

11-30-2011 18:50 BJT

BEIJING, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- China said Wednesday that the "safety and dignity" of diplomatic personnel and organizations should be ensured, the call coming days after Iranian protesters broke into the British embassy in Tehran.

"China always upholds that the safety and dignity of diplomatic personnel and organizations should be ensured and safeguarded," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said at a daily press briefing.

On Tuesday, thousands of angry Iranians staged protests in front of the British embassy in central Tehran and the British Council compound in the Qolhak area in northern Tehran, one day after Iran's Guardian Council of the Constitution, the country's highest legislative body, unanimously approved reducing diplomatic ties with Britain in response to its "hostile" policy against Iran.

Britain severed all links with Iran's banks last week as part of its new financial sanctions in the wake of a report by the International Atomic Energy Agency that expressed concern over Tehran's controversial nuclear program.

Protesters stormed into the embassy building, smashed windows and set fire to the British flag.

Those moves went against international laws and the fundamentals of international relations, Hong said, adding that China hopes the issue will be addressed appropriately.
