Russia delays service of new nuclear submarine

12-03-2011 09:01 BJT

MOSCOW, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- The Russian Navy has decided not to put into active duty its newest Severodvinsk nuclear submarine until the end of 2012, the Russian Defense Ministry said Friday.

The reasons behind the delay were "low quality of some component parts and the need to conduct more tests of the missiles" carried by the submarine, said the Sevmash shipyard.

The Severodvinsk submarine would spend nearly all the year in the sea for these tests, said the military.

The submarine was launched in June 2010 and was originally planned to begin service in 2011.

The construction of the fourth-generation submarine started in December 1993. By 2020, Russia plans to build up to 10 submarines of this type, capable to carry 24 strategic missiles each.
