Brazilian Champions comes to dramatic end

RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- The 2011 Brazilian Championship came to an end on Sunday in the 38th and final round of the tournament. With ten matches taking place simultaneously, Brazilian throughout the globe were glued to their televisions and/or computers to follow the results.

The running-point tournament title was up for grabs in the last round. Leader Corinthians needed a minimum draw in order to seal its tournament title. Meanwhile, Vasco da Gama had to win and hope for Corinthians to lose to Palmeiras in order to become this year' s winner.

However, Corinthians was able to play out to a scoreless draw against archrival Palmeiras while Vasco da Gama played out to a 1-1 draw against rival Flamengo, equating in a Corinthians title with 71 points.

Vasco da Gama' s 1-1 draw against Flamengo kept the team in second place with 69 points, earning a second place finish. The result was good enough to secure Flamengo' s standing among the top-four, finishing in fourth place with 61 points.

Fluminense' s 1-1 draw with rival Botafogo secured the team' s fourth place standing with 63 points. Botafogo ends a disappointing season that accumulated in head coach Caio Junior' s dismissal in the closing rounds of the tournament. Botafogo ends the competition in ninth place with 56 points.

Internacional received cross-town rival Gremio in the last round of play. Winning 1-0, Internacional finished the tournament in fifth place with 60 while Gremio remained in twelfth place with 48 points.

Sao Paulo surged to a 4-1 win over rival Santos and improved the team' s finals standing to sixth place with 59 points. Santos, the winner of the 2011 Libertadores Cup, finished the tournament in tenth place with 53 points. Santos will travel to Japan to participate in the 2011 Club World Cup.

With a 1-1 draw against rival Avai, Figueirense ends the tournament in seventh place with 58 points. Avai ends in twentieth and last place with 31 points.

Coritiba lost the possibility of finishing in fifth place due to its 1-0 loss on the road against rival Atletico-PR. Coritiba ends in eighth place with 57 points while Atletico-PR finishes in seventeenth place with 41 points.

Palmeiras finished in eleventh place with 50 points due to its scoreless draw against champion Corinthians.

Atletico-GO crushed America-MG 5-1, improving the team to a thirteenth place finish. America-MG closes the tournament in nineteenth place with 37 points.

Home team Bahia beat Ceara 2-1, ending the competition in fourteenth place with 46 points. Ceara concludes the tournament in a disappointing eighteenth place with 39 points.

In the final match of the day, home team Cruzeiro crushed rival Atletico-MG 5-1. Cruzeiro ends the tournament in sixteenth place with 43 points while its rival stands one position better in fifteenth place with45 points.
