Winners and losers of 2011 Brazilian Championship

RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- With the closure of the 2011 Brazilian Championship in the 38th and final round on Sunday, the winners and losers were defined. Apart from Corinthians' championship title, clubs' participation in multiple 2012 tournaments were confirmed.

Corinthians won its fifth Brazilian Championship, ending the tournament in first place with 71 points. Along with Corinthians, second place Vasco da Gama, third place Fluminense and fourth place Flamengo are guaranteed to play in the 2012 Libertadores Cup. Fifth place Internacional will enter a preliminary play-off in order to qualify for the continental competition.

Sixth place Sao Paulo, seventh place Figueirense, eighth place Coritiba, ninth place Botafogo, tenth place Santos, eleventh place Palmeiras and twelfth place Gremio all earned the right to play in the 2012 South American Championship.

Santos, the winner of this year' s Libertadores Cup, also earns the right to play in the 2012 edition of the tournament.

Thirteenth place Atletico-GO, fourteenth place Bahia, fifteenth place Atletico-MG and sixteenth place Cruzeiro did not qualify for an international competition in 2012, but earned the right to continue in the first division of the 2012 Brazilian Championship.

The bottom-four teams of the tournament suffered relegation into the second division. The teams consist of seventeenth place Atletico-PR, eighteenth place Ceara, nineteenth place America-MG and twentieth and last-place Avai.

The four teams to enter the first division of the 2012 Brazilian Championship are the winner of the 2011 second division Portuguesa, second place Nautico, third place Ponte Preta and fourth place Sport.
