SINGAPORE, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- A 22-year-old man collapsed after finishing 21.1 kilometer half marathon at the Standard Chartered Marathon in Singapore over the weekend, local daily Straits Times reported on Monday.

Malcolm Sng Wei Ren, 22, collapsed at the finishing line on Sunday morning. He was rushed to hospital and died an hour later.

The police confirmed the death of a 22-year-old at the hospital, saying that it was "looking into the matter."

Event organiser Singapore Sports Council said in a statement that "the organising committee will assist the police in their investigation (and) extends its sincere condolences to the family of the deceased."

Sng was a first-year business management undergraduate at the Singapore Management University, where he was also a member of the symphonic band. He had completed Sunday's run in one hour 53 minutes and 20 seconds in the cool weather, a decent time for an amateur runner.

Kenyan Benard Muthoni won the half marathon, which attracted 19,700 entrants, by finishing it in 1:08:33. The event attracted a record 65,000 participants across six categories -- marathon, half marathon, 10km, 5km Fun Run, 750m Kids Dash and the team relay.

Organizers said 26 certified doctors, 127 nurses, 820 first-aid personnel and 32 ambulances were deployed at the event.
