Indonesia hosts int'l forestry researchers meeting

JAKARTA, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia's Forestry Minister Zulkifli Hasan officially opened a 3-day international meeting of INAFOR (International Forestry Researchers (INAFOR) in Bogor, West Java, local media reported on Monday.

The meeting was held at the International Convention Center of IPB (Bogor Institute of Agriculture), participated by some 500 Indonesian and foreign forestry researchers, as well as NGO activists.

Research and Technology Minister Gusti Muhammad Hatta was present in the opening ceremony.

The international meeting was themed "Strengthening Forest Science and Technology for Better Forestry Development", the Antara news agency reported.

"The meeting was organized to prepare Indonesian researchers to take part in a International Union on Forestry Research Organization (IUFRO) world forestry researcher meeting scheduled to be held in Utah, the United States," Tahrir Fathoni, head of Indonesian forestry ministry's research and development department, said.

IUFRO is a non-profit, non-governmental international network of forest scientists, which promotes global cooperation in forest- related research and enhances the understanding of the ecological, economic and social aspects of forests and trees.

Minister Muhammad Hatta expressed his hope that the meeting produce new formulations in developing the country's forestry industry.

Indonesia hosts the world's third largest forest area covering around 130 million hectares, after Brazil and Congo.
