LOS ANGELES, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Actor Harry Morgan who starred in popular long-running army comedy "M*A*S*H" has died in his Los Angeles home Wednesday morning at the age of 96, local media reported.

The character actor was best known for his portrayal of Colonel Sherman T. Potter, a career army man nearing retirement when he takes over as commander of a unit on "M*A*S*H", an iconic army medical comedy series adapted from the 1970 feature film "MASH" which had been aired for 11 seasons beginning in 1975.

For his role, Morgan received an Emmy nomination for each year of his run with the series, and landed the trophy once in 1980. He also nabbed an Emmy nod for his direction on the show in that same year.

The actor donned the title of Colonel for the CBS spin-off series "After M*A*S*H" between 1983-84.

"He was firm," Morgan said, referring to the character when he was interviewed by The Television Academy Foundation's Archive of American Television in 2004. "He was a good officer and he had a good sense of humor. I think it's the best part I ever had. I loved playing Colonel Potter."

The actor also appeared in more than 100 films including classics such as "High Noon," "The Ox-Bow Incident" and "Inherit the Wind."

In 2006, Morgan was inducted into the Hall of Great Western Performers at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
