Iran to display downed U.S., Israeli "spy drones" in possession: report

12-15-2011 08:18 BJT

TEHRAN, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- Iran plans to display several U.S. and Israeli spy drones it has taken possession of in the near future, the semi-official Mehr news agency reported Wednesday.

National reporters and foreign ambassadors based in Iran's capital Tehran will be allowed to visit the exhibition, an informed source was quoted as saying by Mehr.

According to the source, the foreign unmanned aircrafts that Iran has in its possession include four Israeli and three U.S. drones.

The four Israeli drones that are now in Iran's possession had violated the country's airspace along the eastern borders, while the three U.S. unmanned aircrafts had penetrated into the country' s airspace along either the eastern or southern borders.

Earlier this month, Iranian media reported that a U.S. reconnaissance drone was shot down by the Islamic republic's military in eastern Iran after it had transgressed Iranian borders. Iran's state TV last week showed the footage of the stealth drone.

U.S. officials denied the drone was brought down by Iran, insisting the RQ-170 drone, an unmanned aircraft used for reconnaissance and surveillance by the United States in Afghanistan, crashed due to mechanical problems.

The Wednesday report by Mehr, however, did not say whether the exhibition will include the U.S. RQ-170 drone.

In January, Iran claimed that it had shot down U.S., UK and Israeli drones in Persian Gulf several times over past years.
