ACCRA, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese technological company, Huawei Ghana Limited, on Wednesday handed over a 20-bed medical block worth 200,000 U.S. dollars to residents of Prampram, a coastal community more than 60 km southeast of here.

In addition to completing the new building, Huawei also provided the health center with appropriate furniture and medical supplies and equipment, such as ambulance, a double pickup vehicle, generator set and air conditioners.

Handing over the facility to the Ghanaian government, Managing Director of Huawei Wang Yingjie said his unit was highly committed to contributing to the sustainable development of the Ghanaian society, economy, health and safety of the environment as well as education.

To Huawei, being socially responsible meant enabling Ghanaians to lead healthy, productive lives and doing so required hospitals to meet the medical demands of society.

He said, as a corporate entity, Huawei was always available to engage the public sector in a public-private partnership venture in meeting the needs of society through strategic collaborative efforts.

"This is in line with our international corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, which supports the slogan "Enriching Life Through Communications," the MD noted.

Ghana's First Lady Ernestina Naadu Mills praised Huawei for the facilities and urged the company to put its enormous experience and capacity in ICT to the use of the citizenry to improve the service delivery of hospitals and offer improved healthcare to Ghanaians.

She said the new facility would enhance and increase the ability of the Prampram health center to tackle issues like increasing maternal mortality which could only be reduced through effective public-private partnership initiatives.

"We are therefore mobilizing political commitment and support of key stakeholders, including national authorities and communities, to marshal additional resources in support of critical health interventions badly needed in our country," Naadu Mills indicated.

For her part, the wife of the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana Wang Xiuyu said the embassy had always been encouraging and providing guidance to all Chinese companies to play a responsible role in the country they operated in.

"I am so pleased to see that Huawei, one of the leading ICT solutions providers both in China and globally, is taking the lead and committing itself in the fulfillment of corporate social responsibilities (CSR) in Ghana and elsewhere," she said.

"I believe that its contribution will be recognized by the peoples of all host countries," she emphasized.

Huawei is a leading telecom solutions provider with products and solutions have been deployed in over 100 countries and served 45 of the world's top 50 telecom operators, with a vision to enrich people's lives through communications.

The newly commissioned remedial block is expected to amply improve the quality of health service delivery now and for many years to come not only in Prampram but also its immediate surroundings.
