UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- The UN Security Council on Wednesday extended by another year a set of sanctions on Liberia including its arm embargo and travel ban on individuals that threaten the West African country's peace process.

In an unanimously adopted resolution that was drafted by the United States, the 15-member UN body decided "for a period of 12 months from the date of adoption of this resolution," to renew the travel ban and arms embargo.

The set of sanctions was set to expire on Dec. 16.

In the resolution, the council also decided to renew the mandate of the Panel of Experts that monitors the implementation of the measures for another year.

The council requested the panel to conduct two follow-up assessment missions to Liberia and neighboring areas in order to investigate and compile a mid-term and a final report on the implementation, as well as any violations of measures on arms.

The council also reiterated its commitment to the Kimberley Process which is a mechanism established to keep "blood diamonds" from reaching world markets.

Also speaking at the Council, chairman of the Security Council Committee concerning Liberia, Lebanese UN Ambassador Nawaf Salam, voiced the commitment of the committee to "successfully discharge its mandate."

He said that the region "still faces considerable challenges," and highlighted the Security Council's "serious concern" over the lack of progress with regards to the implementation of the assets freeze and demanded the government of Liberia to make "all necessary efforts to fulfil its obligations."
