UNITED NATIONS, Dec.19 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Security Council on Monday expressed its appreciation for the work of the UN Regional Center for Preventative Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA).

Vitaly Churkin, permanent representative of Russia to the UN and this month's president of the Security Council, made the statement to reporters after a meeting on UNRCCA, where 15 council members were briefed by Miroslav Jenca, special representative of the UN secretary-general and head of UNRCCA.

"The members of the Security Council appreciated the efforts of the regional center as a United Nations mechanism for preventive diplomacy to assist Central Asian countries in responding, in accordance with its mandate and through regional cooperation, to challenges to peace and sustainable development of the region," said Churkin.

The UNRCCA was established in 2007 and is headquartered in Turkmenistan. The UNRCCA offices deal with the regional challenges faced by the Central Asian states of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, which include terrorism and drug trafficking.

"The members of the Security Council commended the specific focus in the center's activities on the impact of trans-boundary threats facing the region, implications of national developments on regional stability, and the management of common resources and environmental degradation, and the benefits of increased counter- terrorism cooperation," Churkin said.

The press statement specifically acknowledged UNRCCA's help during recent presidential elections in Kyrgyzstan, which concluded a "process of peaceful and democratic political transition in that country" as well as the role it has played in helping Afghanistan by fostering regional integration that will help with sustainable development and stability.

Churkin also said the council appreciates the preventative diplomacy work of UNRCCA.

"The members of the Security Council recognized the growing interest in preventive diplomacy as a promising and cost-effective tool in the peaceful settlement of disputes, and therefore welcomed the role of UNRCCA, including through mediation and good offices, in identifying and working towards the resolution of crisis situations and developing regional cooperation," he said.
