MANILA, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- Japan will extend emergency assistance of about 14 million pesos (318,000 U.S. dollars) for the Philippine victims of tropical storm Washi (local name Sendong) , the Japanese Embassy in Manila said Tuesday.

"The Government of Japan reiterates its commitment in assisting the Philippine Government's disaster management efforts," the Embassy said in a statement.

Japan will donate relief goods such as water tanks, generators, and other relief items.

Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro earlier expressed his condolences and sympathy for the loss of many lives and for the people affected by the disaster. He added that Japan will spare no efforts in helping the victims of Washi.

In a related development, the European Union has likewise pledged support for the victims of Washi.

In a statement issued Tuesday, EU Ambassador to Manila Guy Ledoux said EU has sent a team of humanitarian experts to southern Philippines to identify the immediate needs of the typhoon victims.

Initial reports revealed the major immediate needs are in the areas of food, water, clothing, blankets, lights, mosquito nets, shelter and medical assistance.

Jose Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission, also offered his deepest condolences to the families of all those who have lost their lives due to Washi.

The storm, which hit mostly central and southern Philippines, brought flash floods, leaving nearly a thousand people dead and hundreds missing.
