MOSCOW, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- One person was killed when an Mi-26 helicopter made an emergency landing in Russia's Urals region on Tuesday, the Russian Investigation Committee's spokesman said.

Vladimir Markin told Itar-Tass new agency that a flight operator died and other crew members were taken to a nearby hospital.

One of the injured was in a grave condition, he added.

There were six people on board the helicopter, according to updated information.

Earlier reports said there were seven people aboard and no one died in the accident.

The chopper went into an uncontrollable spin while landing near an oil plant at low altitude in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area, said the airline company UTair.

The aircraft, carrying 15 tons of diesel fuel, then collided with the ground and caught fire.

Two rescue helicopters had been sent to the scene.

The regional aviation authorities had launched an investigation into the incident.

Mi-26 is the world's largest transport helicopter.
