China's civil aviation passenger traffic this year is expected to reach 8.2 percent year-on-year to total 290 million, according to information released from a working conference of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), the China Business News reported on Monday.

Total volume of air transportation is expected to amount to 57.4 billion ton-kilometers, up 6.6 percent year-on-year. The combined profits of the civil aviation industry are anticipated to total 46.5 billion yuan ($7.4 billion), an increase of 5.1 percent on figures from last year.

The speed of development of airports in China's western region was faster than that of the average in the industry. The increase of passenger throughput in airports in Hebei, Xinjiang, Qinghai, Chongqing and Inner Mongolia exceeded 20 percent, while the newly opened airlines at airports in Urumqi and Lhasa increased enormously.

According to goals set by the CAAC, passenger traffic volume in 2012 will hit 320 million, while cargo and postal traffic volume will amount to 5.78 million tons, up 10.3 percent and 4.7 percent respectively year-on-year.

In addition, the CAAC will allocate 158.5 billion yuan for investment in fixed assets next year, including infrastructure investments of 75 billion yuan.

The CAAC also noted that next year it will continue to strengthen the management of flight delay measures, in an effort to ensure that normal flight rates increase by two percentage points while average delay times are reduced by more than 5 percent.
