Sudan, China celebrate 40th anniversary of medical cooperation

ABU USHAR, Sudan, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Administration of Abu Ushar Hospital in Sudan's central Gezira state and the Chinese medical mission in Sudan on Wednesday celebrated the 40th anniversary of medical cooperation between the two countries.

The celebration was attended by a number of Sudanese officials, representatives of the Chinese medical mission in Sudan, and a number of people who were born at Abu Ushar hospital with the care of Chinese medical teams which have worked at the hospital since 1972.

"This celebration reflects the fruits of medical cooperation between Sudan and China generally and Abu Ushar hospital in particular," said Mahjoub Mohamed, medical director of Abu Ushar Hospital, when addressing the celebration.

He reiterated continuation of the cooperation between the hospital and the Chinese medical mission to cover all the medical services and rare medical specialization.

Commissioner of Al-Hisahaisa locality in Gezira State Abdul- Rahman Al-Amin, for his part, said that "maternity and child care is one of their priorities to reduce the suffering of the children. "

Mona Abbas, born at Abu Ushar Hospital in 1981 with the care of the Chinese medical team, become a dentist in the medical team at the hospital.

"On behalf of members of my generation who were born at Abu Ushar hospital, I would like express deep thanks and appreciation for the friendly Chinese government and people for the great services that they have provided for Sudan, in particular at the health domain," she told Xinhua.

"I was honored to work with the Chinese doctors within the Chinese medical mission," she added.

In June 2011, Sudan and China signed a deal on medical cooperation to send a Chinese medical mission to operate in Sudan for two years.

According to the deal, 37 Chinese doctors will work in Sudan to exchange scientific and academic experiences and maintain the medical devices at the China-Sudan Friendship Hospital in Omdurman and Abu Ushar Hospital in Gezira State.

The mission was also allowed to provide medical consultations and participate in the medical education.

The China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation (CFPA) and Sudanese Al Bir Wa Al-Tawasul Organization which operates in the field of maternity and child care, in 2011 inaugurated the China- Sudan Abu Ushar Friendship Hospital for Maternity and Child Care. The cost amounted to about one million U.S. dollars, 80 percent of which was donated by the CFPA and the rest 20 percent by the Al Bir Wa Al-Tawasul Organization.
