Argentine president receives thyroid cancer surgery

BUENOS AIRES, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Agentine President Cristina Fernandez had a successful operation Wednesday for the treatment of her thyroid cancer in the Austral University Hospital in Pilar, 50 kilometers north of in Buenos Aires, spokesman of the President 's Office Alfredo Soccimarro said.

Soccimarro said that the surgery was performed by Pedro Sacco, head of the Surgery department and Eduardo Smithler, director of the private hospital.

He said the president's surgery began at 8:30 a.m. local time (1130 GMT) and ended four hours later.

Soccimarro said in the statement that "the surgery on President Cristina Fernandez was carried out without any problem or complication and all her vital signs were good," prompting cheers and applause from supporters gathered outside the hospital.

He added that the president will remain hospitalized for about 72 hours, adding a formal assessment of the operation will be announced Thursday.

According to doctors, the 58-year-old Fernandez has a better than 90 percent chance of recovery.

Fernandez arrived at the hospital around 7:00 a.m. local time ( 1000 GMT) by the presidential helicopter. She was accompanied by her children Maximo and Florencia Kirchner.

Fernandez's cancer was discovered during a routine medical exam on December 22, only 12 days after she was re-inaugurated as Argentina's president.

Vice-President Amado Boudou took over the responsibility from Fernandez before the operation and will remain in charge for 20 more days during Fernandez's recovery, Soccimarro said.
