Factory explosion kills three, injures four in east China

HANGZHOU, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Three people were killed and four others injured in a workshop explosion in Zhejiang Province Wednesday evening, the local government said Thursday.

The accident occurred at 9:50 p.m. when a reaction kettle exploded and triggered a fire in a chemical plant located in the Nanhu district of Jiaxing city, according to the city firefighters.

All seven workers trapped in the workshop were rescued shortly afterward, but two died at the scene, and another died after medical treatment failed. Four others were hospitalized, firefighters said.

The fire was put out at about 11 p.m.

A further investigation is under way.
