Australian new vehicle sales top 1 mln in 2011

01-05-2012 14:10 BJT

SYDNEY, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Australia's new motor vehicle sales topped one million in 2011, marking only the fourth time in history, the nation's peak body for the automotive industry said on Thursday.

New vehicle sales data released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) showed that a total of 1,008,437 new passenger cars, sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and commercial vehicles were sold in 2011.

FCAI Chief Executive Ian Chalmers said 2011 full year sales were an exceptional result given the effects of natural disasters both at home and abroad throughout the year.

"Consumer confidence recovered so well in the second half of 2011 that I can announce to you today that motor vehicles sales in Australia for 2011 totaled 1,008,437," Chalmers told reporters in Sydney on Thursday.

It was shy of 2010's total of 1,035,574 sales and down on the overall record, set in 2007, of 1,049,982 sales.

According to the FCAI, Toyota was the best selling vehicle brand in 2011, while Holden and Ford finished second and third.

Mazda3 was the best-selling model for 2011, edging out Holden Commodore by 812 vehicles to finish with 41,429 sales.

Chalmers said the FCAI's outlook for 2012 was cautiously optimistic.

"Significantly, 2012 will be a year where the industry reinforces the pivotal importance of co-investment programs between the government and industry in competing for, and winning, important new manufacturing assignments for Australia," he said.
